The Benefits of Skip Hire for Your Construction Project

If you’re planning a construction project, waste removal is a critical aspect of the process. There are different methods for managing the waste generated by your construction project, but one of the most convenient and cost-effective ways is through hiring a skip. In our article, we’ll explore the benefits of skip hire for most types of construction projects.

What is Skip Hire?

Skip hire is a service that provides you with a large container for storing and disposing of waste. Skips come in different sizes, from small mini skips to larger roll-on-roll-off skips, and are typically delivered to your construction site by the skip hire company. Once the skip is full, the company will collect it and dispose of the waste in a safe and legal manner.

Benefits of Skip Hire for Construction Projects

Convenience

Skip hire is one of the most convenient methods for managing waste in your construction project. Once the skip is delivered to your site, you can use it to store all the waste generated by your project, including rubble, soil, and general waste. You won’t have to worry about multiple trips to the landfill, which can be time-consuming and expensive

Cost-Effective

Skip hire is also a cost-effective method for managing waste in your construction project. The cost of hiring a skip is generally much lower than the cost of hiring a truck to transport waste to the landfill. You also won’t have to pay for landfill fees, which can add up quickly.

Environmental Benefits

Skip hire is an environmentally friendly method for managing waste in your construction project. Most skip hire companies including our will dispose of the waste in a safe and legal manner, ensuring that it doesn’t harm the environment. Additionally, skip hire companies are required to recycle as much waste as possible, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

Health and Safety

Managing waste on a construction site can be hazardous, particularly if the waste is not disposed of properly. By hiring a skip eliminates the need for manual handling of waste, reducing the risk of injury. Additionally, skip hire companies are required to follow strict health and safety guidelines, ensuring that waste is handled and disposed of safely.

Time-Saving

Using a skip hire service can save you a significant amount of time. You won’t have to spend time transporting waste to the landfill, which can take up valuable time that could be spent on your construction project. Additionally, skip hire companies can deliver and collect skips at a time that is convenient for you, allowing you to focus on your project.

Skip hire is an excellent method for managing waste for your construction project. It offers a range of benefits, including convenience, cost-effectiveness, environmental benefits, health and safety, and time-saving. If you’re planning a construction project, consider using a skip hire service to manage your waste effectively. With skip hire, you can focus on your project and leave the waste removal to the professionals.

A Quick Guide to Skip Sizes

If you are needing a skip for your next project and not sure what size you need, then in this guide we will go through the different sizes of skips that we offer and what projects they may be best suited for.

2 Yard Skips – Mini Skip

2 Yard skips are our smallest skip that we hire out. This size of skip is great if you are dealing with small sites and also if you have a small amount of waste. These skip approximately hold about 2 tonnes of waste. What is also great about this skip as well is that if you have heavy materials it is better to put them into a 2 yard skip where they will be easier to collect. These skips are therefore ideal for doing any garden renovation or smaller bathroom renovation work where some masonry may be included.

4 Yard Skips – Midi Skip

4 Yards skips are small to medium sized skip which are great for smaller projects but also for those slightly larger projects too.

4 Yard Skips can hold up to about 40 full bin bags of waste or approximately 4 tonnes of waste. Again they are a great choice if you are going to do any type of renovation work that may include heavier materials. These skips are often referred to as Midi skips.

8 Yard Skips – Builders Skip

The 8 Yard skips is commonly referred to as the ‘builders skip’ as it is the skip of choice for most builders when carrying out work. Being larger in size this skip can be used in a domestic setting, should you have enough room to place the skip on your property. However, these are great skips for commercial work, for example full refits of shops or very large gardens. These skips can hold up to approximately eight tonnes in waste or about 80 full bin bags.

12 Yard Skips

12 Yard skips are the largest size of skip that we have for hire. These types of skips are about the size of a regular sized van. These skips are most suited for commercial projects therefore are best for projects like large renovations for example larger shops, factory refits or large building sites. Sometimes referred to as the jumbo skip, this skip can approximately hold up to 120 bin bags of waste.

Hopefully this guide has given you some further insight as to which skip size you may need for your next project.

A Guide To Understanding Grab Hire

A hassle-free way to dispose of household or commercial waste, grab hire is a convenient solution when there is a large volume of rubbish to dispose of, like during a home renovation project or when working on a complex construction project. This guide covers how grab hire works, why using a grab lorry might be a good option, and the types of waste that can be disposed of.

What is a grab lorry?

A grab lorry is a truck which features a bucket at the end of an extendable hydraulic arm, which is used to grab waste and place it inside the lorry.

Unlike a skip, which is left on site and filled gradually, a grab lorry arrives on site and is loaded in one go, before waste is driven away for disposal. The design of a grab lorry also means it has a larger capacity than the average skip, so more rubbish can be collected in a single site visit.

Why use grab lorries?

Using a grab lorry to dispose of large volumes of waste is easy and convenient. Because waste is grabbed and deposited directly into the truck, there is no need to wheelbarrow rubbish into a skip or take multiple trips to the tip. The grab operator does all the loading for you, saving you time and manual labour.

The extendable arm of a grab lorry makes it suitable in areas with awkward access, as rubbish can be easily lifted over walls, fences, and other obstacles. Grab hire doesn’t require space on a driveway or road either, and there is no need for permits or signage.

The huge capacity of grab lorries means the lorry can carry the equivalent of up to three skip loads. Plus, because waste is collected and removed immediately, grab hire is a time-saving solution.

Skip hire or grab hire: Which is better?

Choosing between skip hire or grab hire depends on the nature of your project and the site you are working on – but both options are easier than ferrying rubbish to the tip.

During an ongoing project where waste is generated over a period of time, skip hire is a better solution as it allows you to continuously collect rubbish for the duration of the hire period. However, a grab lorry will only be on site for a short time, so grab hire might not work if you are generating waste for a sustained period.

Smaller jobs might not require the large capacity of a grab lorry, in which case a skip could be a more cost-effective solution. Meanwhile, in locations where there isn’t space to keep a skip, or access is difficult, grab lorries provide a safe and convenient alternative for disposing of waste.

Whichever option is right for your project, the waste collected in a skip or grab lorry will be disposed of safely and responsibly, and when hiring from Unicorn Skips, up to 95% of waste will be recycled.

What types of waste can grab lorries remove?

Grab lorries are suitable for disposing of a variety of common waste materials, including;

  • Concrete and bricks
  • Hardcore, earth, and topsoil
  • Garden and green waste
  • General non-hazardous waste

Using grab hire to get rid of rubbish is much easier and safer than transporting heavy and dirty materials to a waste recycling centre in a car or van. All waste can be collected at once too, with no need to sort and separate materials on site.

How much can a grab lorry take?

Before deciding whether to hire a grab lorry, consider how much weight a grab lorry can hold. The average lorry can accommodate up to 16 tonnes of waste, which is why grab hire is a popular option for those disposing of big volumes of rubbish, including gardeners, home renovators, and property developers.

If your project will generate significantly less waste than this, hiring a small skip might be a better solution.
